The Ethiopian Natural Sidamo bean is grown in Southwestern Sidamo, Ethiopia at an altitude of 1,500 – 2,000 feet. It is harvested from September through December. The beans are processed naturally and are dried on raised beds.
The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union was established in 1999 and is the largest Fair Trade coffee producer in Ethiopia. The co-op began with 23,691 members who came from 35 small cooperatives. Their goal was to export coffee to the specialty market. The coffee is grown by indigenous farmers in the southwestern rainforests of Ethiopia. The coffee from this co-op is heirloom, forest-grown and organic. In 2005, the co-op received first place for their unwashed coffee in the East African Fine Coffee Association cupping competition. The co-op produces 100% organic coffee. Annually, they produce around 70 containers. Over 7,000 of their members are Fair Trade certified.
